Our friend Ann just told me this story:
When she was 4 or 5, her grandparents wanted to get her a puppy for her birthday. Ann’s mom loved the idea, and only had two stipulations: female and short hair.
When Grandma and Grandpa came from Tennessee to Michigan for a visit, they all went to the local shelter to get a pound puppy. They looked and looked, but only saw male dogs. It was looking like it might take a little while — maybe more than one trip.
Then suddenly Grandma started to cry — all the homeless dogs were just breaking her heart. Now, Grandpa couldn’t stand for Grandma to cry, so he joined in. “How many can we take home?” Grandma asked. Unfortunately none because they lived in an apartment that didn’t allow pets. And they lived several states away.
Then Ann started to cry — there just didn’t seem to be any short-haired female dogs. Meanwhile, Mom can’t believe what a fiasco the day had turned into!
Finally a shelter employee — angel that she was — showed them some female beagle-mix puppies and Ann picked one out.
So they high-tailed it out of there sniffling… and smiling.
